About the Royal Society

The Royal Society is the independent academy of science in the UK. It was founded in 1660 and works to fund science in the UK and advise on government policy.

Many important figures have been associated with the Society, including Charles Darwin.

Past presidents include Sir Christopher Wren (1680-1682) and Sir Isaac Newton (1703-1727).

More recent presidents include Sir Martin Rees, Astronomer Royal (2005-2010), Nobel Prize winner Sir Paul Nurse (2010–2015), and the current president Venkatraman Ramakrishnan (2015+).
