Research title: The influence of Voice Traits in the Perception of Attractiveness, Dominance and Trustworthiness

You are invited to take part in an online study where you will be asked to rate voices on different traits such as trustworthiness, dominance and attractiveness. The study is part of a psychology final year dissertation at the University of Bath.

Please take time to read the following information carefully before deciding whether or not you would like to participate in the study.

Background: Research has shown that vocal characteristics can influence our perception of other people. Voice traits have been shown to influence mate choice, election outcomes and economical decisions. The study will involve rating varying voices to examine how voice traits affect person perception.

Eligibility requirements: To take part in this study you must be over 18 years old.

What will you have to do? During the online study, you will be asked to listen to a series of voices and to rate them on different traits. You will be asked to indicate how trustworthy, dominant and attractive you find the voices using a 7-point Likert scale (e.g. ‘= not dominant at all, 7=very dominant).

After the study, you will be asked a series of demographic and personality questions.

Usage of head- or earphones are advised to better hear the voice clips.

How long will the study take? The study will take approximately 20-25 minutes.

What will I receive for participating? Participation in this study is voluntary therefore there is no reimbursement for participating.

Can I withdraw from the study? Yes. Your participation is entirely voluntary. If you decide to participate then you can withdraw from the study at any point without giving any reason. If you wish to withdraw, you can simply exit the web-browser at any time to end the study. If you withdraw, any data that you had provided up until that point will be deleted and will not be included in the analyses. However, after completing the study, because of the anonymity you will be not be able to withdraw your data.

What will happen to my data? Participants will be allocated a random number on starting the study and no identifying data will be collected ensuring anonymity and confidentiality. Data will be stored on a secure server or password protected computer. It will be only accessible to the researchers for analytical purposes.

What if I need further information? If you need more information please contact Panna Farkas (pf317@bath.ac.uk), Dr Anthony Little (a.little@bath.ac.uk) or Dr Nathalia Gjersoe (Chair, Psychology Research Committee – n.gjersoe@bath.ac.uk).
