Welcome to the Experiment

Study title: The association of sex and sexual orientation with the perception of attractive faces

You are invited to take part in a study where you will be required to rate a variety of faces for aesthetic attractiveness. Please take time to read the following information carefully.

Background
Research has shown that differences in sex and sexual orientation influence how attractiveness is perceived. This study will focus on rating faces based on aesthetic attractiveness, as opposed to sexual attractiveness, to investigate whether sexual orientation and sex impact ratings of aesthetically attractive faces, as well as when the faces are presented at different speeds.

Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible to take part in this study you need to be 16 years old or above and must have normal or corrected-to-normal vision (i.e. glasses).

What will I be asked to do?
During the experiment, you will firstly fill in a series of demographic questions including: age, sex, sex at birth, sexual orientation. You will then view faces which you will be asked to rate the faces on aesthetic attractiveness using a 7-point Likert scale (e.g., 1 = unattractive, 7 = attractive). The faces will be presented for either 0.5 seconds or 3 seconds, in a random order. You will have the chance to practice for the first three images before starting the experiment. Instructions for each task will appear onscreen.

Please complete the study on a computer or laptop, in a quiet environment where you are unlikely to be disturbed and ensure you have a good Wi-Fi connection. Please also keep your electronic device a minimum of 30cm from your eyes.

How long will the study take?
The study should last approximately 15 minutes.

What will I receive for participating?
Your participation is voluntary. However, students at the University of Bath will receive one participation credit from the Research Participation Scheme.

Can I withdraw from the study?
Yes. Your participation is entirely voluntary. If you decide to participate, you can withdraw from the study at any point without giving reason. If you wish to withdraw during the experiment, simply close the browser window. If you withdraw from the study, any collected data will be deleted and not used in further analyses.

All data collected in this study will be anonymised. There is no record that links the data collected from you with personal data from which you could be identified. Once you have completed the study, we cannot withdraw your data at a later stage because of the anonymised nature of the study.

What if I need further information?
If you have any questions at any time about the study, please do not hesitate to contact Ilona Makhunova at im396@bath.ac.uk

By continuing, you confirm that you are 16 years old or above and have normal or corrected-to-normal vision (i.e. glasses, contact lenses).
